Can you build your own sauna? An honest guide from people who build them

Build your own sauna: hand tools, drill and cedar boards on a workbench

Every couple of months, someone sends us photos of a half-finished sauna: frame up, cladding halfway, wires poking out of a wall, and a short message — “how do I finish this?” We build saunas for a living, and yet we genuinely respect the instinct to build your own sauna. Carpentry is satisfying, the internet is full of Finnish self-build videos, and a small wooden room honestly does not look complicated.

So instead of the usual contractor scare piece, here is a fair map: what you can realistically do yourself, what it costs, the exact points where DIY saunas fail, and the few places where you should hand the tools to a professional without debate. We wrote it for the North Sumatra reality specifically — roughly 80 percent humidity year-round, older houses with limited PLN capacity, imported timber arriving by ship through Belawan — because advice written for Finland or Canada fails here in very specific ways.

One ground rule before we start: every price in this article is indicative, taken from the same benchmarks we use in real quotations. Where the honest answer depends on your house, we say so instead of inventing a number.

What you can realistically build yourself

If you have real carpentry experience — you have framed a wall, hung a door, and your shelves do not wobble — roughly half of a dry sauna is honest DIY territory:

  • The frame. Standard stud framing to sauna dimensions. Careful measuring, square corners, nothing exotic.
  • The insulation. Mineral wool cut between the studs. Tedious, itchy, entirely doable.
  • The interior cladding. Tongue-and-groove boards over battens. This is where patience pays: gaps and proud nail heads show forever, and nail heads that touch skin at 90°C brand you like cattle. Blind-nail or clip the boards and you will be fine.
  • The benches. Simple joinery, but the material decides everything — more on that below.
  • The outdoor deck. If your sauna opens to a garden, decking in local ulin or bengkirai is exactly what those hardwoods are for.

None of this is trivial, but none of it is dangerous either. A mistake in this list costs you rework and pride, not safety.

Where DIY ends: the work that needs a professional

Everything electrical. A 6–9 kW sauna heater is one of the most power-hungry appliances a house can own. It needs a 7700–11000 VA connection — many older Medan homes run on 2200–5500 VA and need a PLN upgrade first — plus heat-resistant SiHF cabling, a dedicated breaker and an ELCB residual-current device. Ordinary PVC-insulated household cable next to a sauna heater is how fires start; in our renovation work, wiring is the single most common thing we tear out of self-built saunas. The PLN upgrade itself is paid to PLN at official tariffs, and a licensed electrician should do every connection.

The heater installation. Clearances to wood, the protective guard, stone loading, sensor placement — the manufacturer warranty on a Harvia, Sawo or Tylo stove depends on correct installation, and so does your insurance position if anything ever goes wrong.

Anything involving steam. A steam room is not a sauna with extra humidity; it is a bathroom-grade waterproofing project with a sloped floor, a sloped ceiling, ceramic surfaces and a pressurised 6–9 kW steam generator. We say this plainly: it is not a DIY project at all, which is why steam room construction is specialist work everywhere in the world, not just here.

The moisture-protection design. You can physically staple foil yourself — but deciding vent positions, gap sizes and airflow balance for a room that swings from 30°C to 90°C in tropical humidity is where experience earns its keep. Get a design review even if you build every stick of it yourself.

The shopping list, with honest numbers

Here is what you actually need to build your own sauna, with a 2×2 metre dry room as the reference case. We deliberately anchor to our project benchmarks rather than invent retail prices, because material costs swing with wood choice and exchange rates:

  • Heater, 6–9 kW, imported brand. With professional installation, IDR 15–35 million indicative — the same benchmark as a heater replacement in an existing sauna. This is the one component where a cheap substitute always ends badly.
  • Interior timber. Western red cedar, Scandinavian spruce or thermowood for walls and ceiling; aspen or abachi for benches. The biggest material variable in the whole project — imported through Belawan with 1–2 weeks of lead time from Jakarta or Surabaya stock. Cost: genuinely tergantung — it depends on species, grade and volume.
  • Aluminium-foil vapour barrier and heat-resistant tape. Cheap, unglamorous, and the difference between a sauna and future demolition.
  • Mineral wool insulation. Sized to your stud depth.
  • Ventilation components. An intake near the heater, an adjustable exhaust, and the discipline to actually install both.
  • A door with 8 mm tempered glass, or a full glass sauna door.
  • Electrical materials plus an electrician. SiHF cable, breaker, ELCB — priced by your electrician, not by us, and never skipped.

For scale: our turnkey custom builds run IDR 60–120 million, economy versions with combined materials start around IDR 40 million, and a factory prefab cabin delivered and installed is IDR 15–35 million. Once a DIY build includes a legitimate heater, real sauna timber and paid electrical work, the materials alone often land in prefab territory — what you save is mostly labour, and what you carry is all of the risk below.

A build sequence that works in the tropics

  1. Check the electricity first. Read the VA rating on your meter before you draw anything. If you are at 2200–5500 VA, the PLN upgrade conversation happens now, not after the walls are up.
  2. Design small and low. A 2×2 metre footprint with a modest ceiling heats faster, needs a smaller heater and forgives more mistakes.
  3. Frame the room and rough in the door opening.
  4. Bring the electrician in to run SiHF cable routes before any insulation goes up.
  5. Insulate, then foil. Mineral wool between studs, aluminium foil over it with taped seams — shiny side in — then battens to create the air gap behind the cladding. This order is not optional.
  6. Install ventilation — intake low near the heater, exhaust high on the opposite side.
  7. Clad the walls and ceiling, blind-nailing every board.
  8. Build the benches in aspen or abachi.
  9. Heater installation and connection by professionals, with guard rail and sensors per the manual.
  10. First test firing — slow and supervised. Smell for scorching, watch the breaker, check that the room actually reaches and holds temperature.

The mistakes that ruin most DIY saunas

This list is not theoretical. It is, almost line for line, our renovation order book.

  1. No vapour barrier — or plastic instead of foil. At Medan’s roughly 80 percent humidity, moisture drives into the walls with every session, condenses, and stays. Mold behind the cladding follows in 2–3 years, and the fix is a teardown, not a touch-up.
  2. Household PVC wiring. It melts, it shorts, and it turns a wellness project into a fire risk. SiHF cable, a dedicated breaker and an ELCB are the minimum, every time.
  3. Benches from dense local hardwood. Ulin and bengkirai are magnificent outside and unusable inside: they store heat like a frying pan and burn bare skin at sauna temperatures. Benches must be aspen, abachi or similar low-density species.
  4. No ventilation. The sauna feels stuffy, sessions turn heavy, the wood never dries — and mold wins again.
  5. An outdoor build without a roof. Equatorial UV and near-daily wet-season rain will gray, crack and rot an unprotected sauna. Outdoor formats need a canopy from day one.

Read that table coldly and the conclusion is uncomfortable for the DIY romantic: by the time you buy a real heater and real timber, full DIY often costs prefab money and takes ten weekends instead of two. A professionally built home sauna closes in 2–4 weeks of installation and comes with a 2-year structural warranty plus the factory warranty on the heater — your own work carries neither.

And if the appeal of DIY is mostly budget, look sideways before you look down: an infrared cabin draws 1.7–2.4 kW, usually needs no PLN upgrade at all, installs in 1–2 days and costs IDR 30–70 million indicative. For compact homes — the newer builds around Medan Selayang, for instance — it answers the same need with a tenth of the construction drama. Owners with generous gardens in Medan Johor tend to dream bigger, and that is fair too; just budget honestly for it.

When does building your own sauna genuinely make sense? When you love the process itself, you have real carpentry hands, your electrical capacity is already sufficient, and your schedule can absorb the learning curve. That combination exists — we have seen self-built saunas in North Sumatra that made us nod with respect. Every one of them had professional wiring and a proper vapour barrier.
