Most owners who message us start with some version of the same line: “We are renovating our house in Medan Johor and we keep coming back to the idea of a sauna — what would it actually cost us?” We answer that question on WhatsApp several times a week, so we decided to write the long answer down properly, with the same numbers we put into real quotations — not the vague “starting from” teasers that make budgeting impossible.
One thing before the numbers. Every figure in this article is indicative. Sauna cost in Indonesia moves with size, materials, the heater brand and — more often than people expect — the electrical capacity of your house. The ranges below are the 2026 rates we work with across Medan, Deli Serdang and the Karo highlands, so treat them as an honest map rather than a contract. The final figure always comes out of a free on-site survey, which costs you nothing but an hour.
And if you only read one paragraph, read this one: a proper custom home sauna in Indonesia costs about as much as a good kitchen renovation — IDR 60–120 million for a classic 2×2 metre dry sauna that seats four. There are honest ways to spend less, a few predictable ways to spend more, and two hidden costs that surprise almost everyone. The rest of this article walks through all of it.
Sauna cost in Indonesia at a glance
Ask about sauna cost in Indonesia and any honest contractor will answer in juta — millions of rupiah — and with a table, not a single number. Every format we build fits into the one below. These are complete turnkey figures, not bare material costs, and all of them are indicative until the room has been measured:

Two things are deliberately not in the table. The measurement survey is free — across Greater Medan we usually come within days, and in Berastagi we run scheduled visits once a week. And if your home needs a PLN power upgrade to feed the heater, that fee goes to PLN at official tariffs, not to us; we help with the paperwork, but we do not earn on it.
Where the money actually goes
When people first see IDR 60–120 million for a small wooden room, the fair question is: on what, exactly? Four lines carry most of any sauna budget.
The heater. The heart of the project and the least negotiable line. We install imported Finnish and Scandinavian-brand stoves — Harvia, Sawo, Tylo — because they survive years of regular use and come with a 1–2 year manufacturer warranty and available spare parts. A quality 6–9 kW heater with professional installation runs IDR 15–35 million indicatively, which is also what a replacement costs when an old sauna comes back to life.
The wood. A sauna interior lives at 70–90°C, and ordinary construction timber cannot take it. We line interiors with imported western red cedar, Scandinavian spruce or thermowood, and build benches from aspen or abachi — low-density species that stay touchable at full temperature. Local hardwoods like ulin and bengkirai are excellent outdoors, and we use them for decking, but inside a hot room they store too much heat and will burn bare skin. Imported timber and heaters arrive through Belawan port, typically 1–2 weeks from warehouse stock in Jakarta or Surabaya.
The electrical work. Heat-resistant SiHF cabling, a dedicated breaker and an ELCB residual-current device are standard in our builds, never optional extras. This line is invisible in photos, which is exactly why cheap builds skip it — and why we will not.
Design and labour. Every project starts with a 3D design and an itemized RAB, so you approve exactly what you are paying for before anything is ordered. On-site installation of a home sauna takes 2–4 weeks.
Format by format: from prefab cabins to hotel spas
Custom home dry sauna — IDR 60–120 million. The format most of our clients choose: built to fit your exact room, full imported-wood interior, proper ventilation and a heater sized to the volume. This is the core of our home sauna building service in Medan. An economy version with combined materials — imported wood where your skin touches it, more affordable panels where it does not — starts around IDR 40 million and is a legitimate build, not a compromise on safety.
Prefab and mini saunas — IDR 15–35 million. Factory-made cabins that we deliver, assemble and connect. The fastest and cheapest route to a real sauna if your room and power capacity already suit a standard size.
Infrared cabins — IDR 30–70 million. Different physics: 45–60°C air while the panels warm your body directly. The practical advantage is power draw — 1.7–2.4 kW runs on many existing connections without any PLN upgrade, which is why infrared sauna installation is what we most often recommend for the compact newer homes around Medan Selayang. Installation takes 1–2 days.
Steam rooms — IDR 50–100 million. A different construction discipline altogether: 40–45°C at near-100 percent humidity means full waterproofing, a floor sloped to a drain, a ceiling sloped so condensation slides down the walls instead of dripping on your shoulders, ceramic or mosaic finishes and a 6–9 kW steam generator. Our steam room construction projects take 3–5 weeks, mostly because waterproofing needs time to cure properly.
Outdoor garden saunas — IDR 80–150 million. The garden format, and the best-looking thing we build. In the leafy gated clusters of Medan Johor — J City, Citra Wisata, Royal Sumatera — a garden sauna cabin under a proper roof turns a backyard into a small resort. The roof is not decoration: Medan rain and equatorial UV will destroy an unprotected cabin.
Commercial saunas — from IDR 150 million. Gyms, spas and hotels need saunas engineered for hours of daily use: heavier heaters, tougher benches, ventilation sized for turnover. Projects run 4–8 weeks; see our commercial sauna work for how those are scoped.
Renovation — IDR 15–50 million. If a sauna already exists but has tired out, a typical scope — new cladding, new benches, ventilation fixes or a heater swap — costs a fraction of a new build. Details are on the sauna renovation service page.
The hidden costs nobody puts in the brochure
Two items regularly surprise owners, and we would rather you hear them from us before you commit money anywhere.
The PLN upgrade. A 6–9 kW sauna heater needs a 7700–11000 VA connection. Many older Medan homes — especially the colonial-plot houses around Medan Baru that we renovate so often — run on 2200–5500 VA. The upgrade is paid to PLN at official tariffs, it is the owner’s cost, and it is the first thing we check at the survey. Newer houses in Medan Polonia often come with 7700+ VA already installed, which is one reason wellness rooms are planned there at the construction stage. Where an upgrade is impossible or not worth it, an infrared cabin at 1.7–2.4 kW is the honest workaround.
Ventilation and moisture protection. Medan sits at roughly 80 percent humidity all year. A sauna without an aluminium-foil vapour barrier, an air gap behind the cladding and balanced intake-and-exhaust ventilation grows mold and rots within 2–3 years — we know because rescuing exactly those builds is a steady part of our renovation work. This protection is included in our quotes; when you compare contractors, ask specifically whether it is included in theirs.
A smaller one: logistics. For projects out in Deli Serdang — Cemara Asri, Lubuk Pakam, the Kualanamu corridor — or up the mountain road to Berastagi, which takes 1.5–2.5 hours of serpentine, we put material logistics into the RAB from the start rather than surprising you with it later.
What a sauna costs to run per month
The good news: running costs are modest next to the build. At a typical rhythm of 2–3 sessions a week, indicative monthly figures look like this:

Most of that is electricity, with a little left for cleaning and occasional stone or gasket care. Sessions are most comfortable in the evening in an air-conditioned house — a detail that sounds trivial until you try an afternoon session during the September–December rains.
How to keep the cost under control — honestly
- Right-size the room. A 2×2 metre sauna seats four people comfortably. Every extra half metre means a bigger heater, more imported wood and, potentially, a bigger PLN connection.
- Use combined materials. Keeping cedar or thermowood where your body touches and simpler materials elsewhere is how a build starts from IDR 40 million instead of 60.
- Consider prefab or infrared first. If the budget is tight or your power capacity is fixed, IDR 15–35 million for a prefab or IDR 30–70 million for infrared beats stretching for a custom build.
- Renovate instead of rebuilding. An existing sauna with good bones usually needs IDR 15–50 million, not a full new budget.
- Never economize on the invisible three. Vapour barrier, wiring and heater quality are where cheap saunas fail. Every rupiah saved there tends to come back as a renovation quote — with mold as a bonus.

- Free survey. We measure the room and check your electrical capacity; Greater Medan within days, Berastagi on the weekly schedule.
- 3D design plus RAB. You see the sauna and an itemized estimate before committing to anything.
- 50 percent down payment locks the contract and starts the material order — imported wood and heaters take 1–2 weeks to arrive.
- Installation. 2–4 weeks for a home dry sauna; other formats as noted above.
- Test firing and handover. We heat the sauna with you, walk through the controls, and hand over a 2-year structural warranty plus the manufacturer warranty on the heater.
So what should you budget?
An honest single sentence: real sauna cost in Indonesia starts around IDR 15–35 million for prefab, IDR 30–70 million for infrared, IDR 60–120 million for the custom dry sauna most families actually want, IDR 50–100 million for a steam room, IDR 80–150 million for a classic cabin in the garden — all indicative, all confirmed only after a free survey, and all dependent on one unglamorous number: the VA rating on your meter. Check that first, and the rest of the budget behaves.
