A steam room is a small climate machine, and every part below exists for a reason. The room runs at 40–45°C with humidity at effectively 100 percent — gentler heat than a dry sauna’s 70–90°C, but far harder on the building around it. So the floor and walls get full waterproofing, built up in cured layers. The floor slopes to a drain, because a room that makes water must also get rid of it by design, not by mop. The ceiling is built with a deliberate slope so condensation slides to the walls instead of dripping cold on your shoulders mid-session — the single most common comfort failure in amateur builds. Surfaces are finished in mosaic or ceramic on cement board, never in anything organic. The steam generator — 6–9 kW for typical home rooms — sits outside the wet zone with service access, and the door is 8 mm tempered safety glass.
There is also a tropical wrinkle that builders from cooler countries never have to think about: in Medan, the air outside the steam room already carries roughly 80 percent humidity. Ventilation has to dry the room after every use, or the moisture simply stays — first as a smell, then as mold, then as damage in the surrounding rooms.
How a steam room contractor in Medan builds the wet layers
Order of work is everything. The substrate is prepared and the slopes are formed first — floor to drain, ceiling to the walls. Power before tiles: the PLN check
A 6–9 kW steam generator makes the same demand on your electrical panel as a full sauna heater, so we check capacity before any design work. Many older Medan homes — including the big houses around Jl. Sudirman in Medan Baru — run on 2,200–5,500 VA and need a PLN upgrade to 7,700–11,000 VA; the upgrade is billed at PLN tariffs and we walk the paperwork through with you. Every figure is indicative: the spread depends on room size, how much substrate correction the existing walls need, tile choice and generator specification.
